Unsinkable
By Linda Imbler

Violet Jessup performed not mere symbolic acts, but leaves behind a real-life

legacy of courage, enduring tragedies it is said no one could have foreseen.

She was never one to sprawl in front of a storm. On two separate occasions,

once, while shadows were thrown onto the deck by a gigantic iceberg,

another, as the ships were being sunk by tools of war clinging to hulls

the way leaves cling to trees. With the grey sea rising in front of her,

surviving bone freezing cold, she stood as that voice in the night, guiding,

helping others safely to doors of escape, warning them to watch their step,

locking her own fearful thoughts away. She was just one candle but she lit

the way for dozens. She cannot stand as the only weave on the cloth of brave women.

Stand and be counted. Find your own place in her line of heroines.
