A Shadow that Lingers

By Sunaina Rai

In the depth of shifting shades I keep,

I glimpse a self that isn't complete ,

A version shaped by Hands , not MINE

drawn by YOU, then lost in time

I reach,

I chase,

I fall ,

I seek,

But still that self won't stay to keep

Back and forth the echoes call

Yet I can't claim that self at all

A fleeting face ,

I cannot keep

A dream of me

That drifts to sleep

I chase reflection in the rain

But every face dissolves again

No mirror shows the shape I seek

Just eyes too tried, a voice too weak

I run,

I slip,

I call,

I trip,

The self I knew begins to blur

A whisper lost in who we were.
